Monday Memo April 15, 2019


We have a short AND busy week this week!! Today we read chapters 14 and 15 in Treasure Island. We also took a practice LEAP test and went over the test questions. Due to a scheduling conflict, D.E.A.R. DAY is tomorrow, April 16. Students may bring their pillow, blanket, snack, and drink to school with them in a bag. Students do not have homework this week in my classroom, but I do ask that they read every night if they have not met their A.R. goal. On Wednesday, students will go to the communications lab and Thursday is Field Day!

Monday Memo April 8

This week we will continue to read Treasure Island. We are reading this text together and independently. Students will work with a partner to answer questions over Chapters 2-4 Tuesday in class. Students will have a vocabulary test on April 10, 2019. This test will be over Lesson 13. We only have TWO more vocabulary test (after this one)! There will be NO spelling test this week!

April is flying by so please check to make sure your child is getting their A.R. points. I try and check their A.R. points every Monday or Friday and I am amazed at how many points some of my students have!! D.E.A.R. day will be on April 17, 2019. Your child may bring a snack, drink, blanket, and pillow. Please have all of those items in a bag. As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

Monday Memo March 4

Happy Monday! March 4-6 Students will go to the Communications Lab during their ELA time! Students will have a vocabulary test over lesson 11 on Thursday, March7, 2019. We will also begin a quick St. Patrick’s day writing on Thursday. Friday will be the Louisiana Carnival! I look forward to seeing you all Friday! Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thursday/Monday Memo February 21, 2019

I hope everyone enjoyed their extra winter break! Students will have a lesson 10 vocabulary test Friday, February 22, 2019. D.E.A.R day is also February 22. Students may bring their blanket, pillow, drink, and a snack to enjoy while they are reading their AR books. Next week we will continue reading our Tall Tales and discussing text features in a Tall Tale.

Monday Memo February 4, 2019

This week students will research a famous explorer in class and write about their explorer. On Friday, Students will present their explorers in class to their classmates. We will have a Vocabulary test (Lesson 9) on Wednesday and a spelling test on Thursday. As usual, please let me know if you have ANY questions!

This week students will be going to the Communications Lab. They are going to be working on a Narrative Writing. Therefore, we will not have ANY homework this week. Our next Vocabulary test will be on February 6, 2019 over lesson 9.

Monday Memo January 22, 2019

Hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend. This week students will not have a spelling test due to the short week. Students will have a vocabulary test Wednesday, January 23, 2019. The test is over Lesson 8. Today students took their final “Cold Read” for our folktale unit! We will begin the Louisiana Purchase Unit Wednesday. This unit we will focus on non fiction stories about Louisiana and Tall Tales with the setting in the south. As usual, please let me know if you have any questions!


Monday Memo (or Tuesday) January 7, 2019

Happy New Year and Welcome back!

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas Break. I know I did!

We will complete the Cajun Folktale Unit by the end of January. This week students will be reading A Tale of Peter Rabbit. We will discuss new vocabulary words from the text and identify mischievous behaviors from Peter Rabbit. By the end of the week, I will be reading Dear Peter Rabbit, a collection of letters written by famous storybook characters to Peter Rabbit. Working with partners, students are going to look for clues in the text that help them understand how each of the characters feel about that event. We will then discuss the different character’s point of view. In addition to our Peter Rabbit “mini unit”, students will complete Lesson 7 in their Wordly Wise books. Students will have a vocabulary test Friday, January 11. There is no spelling for this week. Again, I hope everyone had a Happy New Year and a WONDERFUL Christmas Break!

Hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving!

Wow! We made it to December! This Wednesday my E.L.A. friends will have a vocabulary test over Lesson 6 words. Students will also have a spelling test Thursday and D.E.A.R day Friday! Students are still reading and learning about folktales. We are reading from the text, The Classic Tales of Brer Rabbit. We will continue with folktales for the next two weeks. Students have a Holiday/Winter Book report due December 17. The information is coming home today in their notebooks. Monday Memo November 12, 2018

One more week of school and then it is Thanksgiving Break! Students will have a comprehension Quiz on the story Bouki Over a Barrel this Wednesday (11/14). We have been reading this Cajun Folktale in class and have had many group discussions about the text. Students can study their “Tricky Vocabulary” in their BLUE E.L.A notebooks to help them answer questions on the quiz. I have also added a link to Lapin Plays Possum. This is where you can find the story, Bouki Over a Barrel. It is the first chapter of the book. Feel free to also read the chapter, Lapin Plays Possum, with your child. We will be reading this Cajun folktale next.

As usual, students will have a spelling test on Thursday. The Spelling words are homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings. I also sent home a “take home” unit 1 vocabulary test. Students have until Friday to turn their Unit 1 vocabulary test in to me. Please, please, please turn in the vocabulary test before Friday if you know your child will be absent Friday.

Wow! I can not believe it is almost November.  I hope everyone had a great time at the school carnival. I enjoyed seeing so many friendly faces.

Please do not forget to remind your child to read their AR book. This 9 weeks students need 10 AR points. I passed out Homework passes today and students are free to use them one time this year!Students have a vocabulary test on Lesson 5 words Wednesday, October 31, 2018. Monday Memo October 22, 2018

I hope everyone had a nice Fall break! I know I did!! Students presented their pumpkin book reports today and they were so adorable. I loved listening to their presentations and seeing their creative pumpkins. I am still in need of maybe one or two more volunteers to take pumpkins to Betty Virginia Park tomorrow at 9:00am. Please let me know if you can help!

This week students will begin their new Unit in Reading. We are beginning a Cajun Folktale Unit. Students will learn about different characteristics of a folktale and some Cajun Vocabulary. Monday Memo October 8, 2018

I hope students enjoyed their first D.E.A.R. Day! I have added a few pictures of them from Friday. They seemed to  enjoy some quiet time to read.

We have a short week this week because there is NO SCHOOL on FRIDAY! Our centers are in full swing. Ask your child what they are doing at each of their centers! Students will have a vocabulary test  Wednesday (Lesson 4) and a spelling test on Thursday. In class, We are reading More Stories Julian Tells and discussing the chapters.

Book Reports– Most students have gotten their book approved. There was no note  sent home saying “approved”, I just gave them a verbal “O.K.”

I will be sending a note home at the end of the week asking for your permission to send the pumpkins to Pumpkin Shine on Line. If students participate in Pumpkin Shine, I will give them a homework pass. They may use this homework pass in my room on ANY homework assignment. 🙂 Also, I think it would be a great idea to have the name of the book and character somewhere on the pumpkin or a separate sign. This would be helpful for children walking by to have a better understanding of “who the pumpkin is”. Monday Memo October 1, 2018

Happy Monday! Today students received their Pumpkin Character Book Report packet and we discussed in class. Please no REAL carved  pumpkins. Real pumpkins may be used as long as they are not carved. All the information students need is in their book report packet. It should be in their “Parent Communication” folder.

This week we will have an end of the book test on The Stories Julian Tells. Students have a study guide in their BLUE E.L.A. notebook. The test will be on Wednesday. After the test students will go to the communications lab for Leader in Me. Thursday students will have library.

There will be NO SPELLING Test this week. D.E.A.R day is Friday! Students may bring their favorite blanket and pillow to class. There is a note coming home in their Tuesday folder with more information.

If I have any parents that would like to volunteer to help set up at Pumpkin Shine on Line please email me! I need a few parents to pick up Pumpkins from our school and drive them to Betty Virginia Park on Tuesday, October 23. Monday Memo September 24, 2018

Today (Monday) we finished the book, The Stories Julian Tells. This week we will finish discussing the book and complete a study guide for the end of the book test. The end of the book test will be Wednesday, October 3, 2018.

Tuesday: We are going to play Kahoot! This is a game we play to review the vocabulary words.

Wednesday: Students will go to the Communications Lab. Students will have a vocabulary test Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Students will be tested on the vocabulary words from Lesson 3.

Thursday: Students will turn in their Spelling homework and take a spelling test.  After their spelling test, students will go to the library and discuss non-literal language. Ask your child to give you an example of non-literal Language.

Friday: Students will have centers during class and work with a partner on answering questions about The Stories Julian Tells.
